Hillary Clinton wins Nevada caucuses over rival Bernie Sanders

Hillary Clinton scored a victory in Nevada’s Democratic caucuses Saturday — holding off an unexpectedly strong challenge from rival Bernie Sanders.

The win gives Clinton a much-needed boost against the surging socialist as the race moves to South Carolina next weekend.

Clinton was declared the winner before all the votes had been tallied. With 76% of the votes in, she was leading Sanders by a margin of 52.3% to 47.7%

"To everyone who turned out in every corner of Nevada with determination and heart: This is your win. Thank you,'' Clinton said on Twitter.

Sanders released a statement congratulating his opponent but noting how close he'd come to an improbable win.

"Five weeks ago we were 25 points behind and we ended up in a very close election," he said.

The dueling Democrats had made last-minute appeals as Nevadans waited in long lines outside voting sites across the state.

Sanders made an impromptu stop Saturday morning at a Las Vegas high school where he expressed confidence he could take a state once considered a lock for Clinton.

“The bigger the turnout, the better I feel,” Sanders said.

Clinton visited Harrah’s Casino — just minutes after Sanders took off — where she implored workers to caucus.
