Anthony Mackie: “Dreadlocks Will Get You Arrested”
Anthony Mackie’s recent interview with The Grio’s Chris Witherspoon has created quite a stir and has raised plenty of eyebrows.
While promoting his new film, “Black or White,” Mackie addressed the topics of race and racial profiling.
When asked to give his views on the “Selma” Oscar snub, Mackie shared his belief that “Selma” was not nominated because people are simply tired of talking about race.
Check out what Mackie had to say below:
“People are just tired of being bombarded with race right now. So everybody is shying away from certain topics and certain movies.”
Mackie then took his controversial statements a step further by suggesting that wearing dreadlocks will get you racially profiled and arrested.
“Like my nephew wanted to grow dreadlocks. I’m like fine, I’ll sit you down and I’ll watch The First 48 with you and everybody you see on that show, that’s doing something wrong, they’re black dudes with dreadlocks. So, do you want to be seen as part of the problem or do you want to be an individual?” he said.
“Let’s just say you have locks and you walking down the street. The police pull you over and say you fit the description of somebody. You start yelling and arguing with the cops. Next thing you know you pressed up against the wall going to jail for something you’re not even involved in just because you look like somebody and you don’t know how to handle yourself.”
Naturally, Mackie’s The Grio interview sparked outrage among social media users and critics who described him as racist against his own people and an “Uncle Tom.”
But now Mackie is going on record to say that his comments were taken out of context in the interview and he feels betrayed by Chris Witherspoon.
In a following interview with EurWeb, Mackie clarified his statements: “What’s really sad is, this is someone I’ve known for about four years. And it’s a black dude. So I felt like we could sit and have a candid conversation about race, and he wouldn’t take soundbites, he would let the entire conversation live, and he didn’t. That’s what frustrates me. Mr. Witherspoon really pissed me off because I trusted him, and he lied.”
And while Mackie claims that Witherspoon is lying, he later contradicted himself in yet another controversial interview with Hip Hollywood where he reiterated his initial comment that what you wear will get you racially profiled by police.
“If you want to grow your hair a certain way, or wear your pants hanging down a certain way, as an adult I’m going to sit you down and say this is how you are going to be perceived. Now you can do it, just know that’s what you are going to have to deal with.”
At this point Anthony, it’s best you stay quiet.
