Mo’Nique Shares Emails to Prove Lee Daniels Offered her ‘Empire’ Role
For the past several weeks, Mo’Nique has been outspoken in the media about being blackballed in Hollywood. She also made claims that the role of Cookie, which Taraji P. Henson brilliantly portrays in “Empire,” was originally offered to her.
Though “Empire” producer Danny Strong has since denied Mo’Nique’s claims, she is coming back with vengeance to prove she’s telling the truth.
In a recent interview with Sway on his “Sway in the Morning” radio show, Mo’Nique provided the host with emails to prove that Lee had in fact offered her the role.
Sway proceeded to read the emails out load on his show. Here was what was in those emails.
“Feb. 18, 2014
Lee Daniels had a conversation with Mo’Nique about his new television pilot for Imagine Tv/Fox called “Empire.” We would like to screen test her for the role of ‘Cookie.’ Please contact us with her television quotes, so that we can start a test, option, deal. We are tentatively looking at Monday, Feb 24 for the screen test.”

Hello I am following up on my previous e-mail regarding Lee Daniels’ pilot and Mo’Nique’s television quotes. This is a time sensitive matter. Lee really does not want Mo’Nique to miss this opportunity.”
A few weeks later, Lee sent Monique’s management another email explaining that FOX preferred having Taraji P. Henson play Cookie instead of Mo’Nique. Lee apologized in the email and said he fought for her to have the role. He also wished her the best in her future endeavors.
Read the final email below:
“March 3, 2014
Unfortunately it’s not going any further for Mo’Nique. Lee fought for her because he thought she would be great for the pilot but studio and network executives insisted on offering the role to Taraji. Thank you so much for providing us with her information. Sorry it didn’t work out. We’re all big fans of hers.”
When asked why she is now choosing to air out the email correspondence between her and Lee, Mo’Nique replied that in no way shape or form is she looking to be vindictive. Instead, she wanted to stand in her truth and salvage her reputation since she was being portrayed as a liar by Danny Strong.
