Akon recently announced the launch of “Solar Academy” that will be located in Africa and supply 600 million Africans with electricity.

Akon’s solar academy is part of his Akon Lighting Africa initiative which will teach people how to maintain solar-powered electricity systems and microgrids.

The solar academy will reportedly be located in Bamako, Mali and will help engineers and entrepreneurs develop skills and obtain jobs that will enable them to create and produce solar power.

“We have the sun and innovative technologies to bring electricity to homes and communities. We now need to consolidate African expertise,” said Samba Baithily, founder ofAkon Lighting Africa with Akon and Thione Niang in  a recent press release.

He added, “We expect the Africans who graduate from this center to devise new, innovative, technical solutions. With this academy, we can capitalize on Akon Lighting Africa and go further.”
