President Obama Hires First Openly Transgender Staff Member
History continues to be made in the White House!
President Obama has recently appointed the first openly transgender staff member to serve in the White House.
The White House’s new staff member goes by the name Raffi Freedman-Gurspan. She previously worked as a policy adviser at the National Center for Transgender Equality. Now that she has moved on to the White House, she will be the outreach and recruitment director for the White House Office of Presidential Personnel.
White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett has issued a statement saying that Raffia "demonstrates the kind of leadership this administration champions."
She added, “[Raffi’s] commitment to bettering the lives of transgender Americans, particularly transgender people of color and those in poverty, reflects the values of this administration."
Naturally, LGBT groups are praised the Obama administration and the white house for making history and not discriminating.
"President Obama has long said he wants his administration to look like the American people. I have understood this to include transgender Americans,” Mara Keisling, the executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equalitys aid in a statement. "A transgender person was inevitably going to work in the White House. That the first transgender appointee is a transgender woman of color is itself significant. And that the first White House transgender appointee is of a friend is inspiring to me and to countless others who have been touched by Raffi's advocacy."
Congratulations to Raffi and kudos to the White House for this historic step!
