Could it be? Findings of a very broad study on the evolution of western pop music done by a group of diligent scientists say yes. This group of scientists published their findings on this study in the Royal Society Open Journal, which say that Hip-Hop is possibly more influential than rock music. Queen Mary University of London and Imperial College Londonexperts took the time out to study about 17,000 songs using 30-second snippets from the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 over a 50-year period:
“We can actually go beyond what music experts tell us, or what we know ourselves about them, by looking directly into the songs, measuring their makeup, and understanding how they have changed,” said lead author of the study Matthias Mauch.
Many musical elements were meticulously analyzed during this study, but it seems that there were three distinctive music revolutions in 1964, 1983 and 1991. In the end, according to TIME, it all boiled down to the conclusion that Hip-Hop was indeed the biggest revolution in American Music.
